Premier Foods has devised a bespoke traceability system for its Hovis bread range in partnership with global supply chain firm Zetes.
The UK’s biggest food manufacturer, with brands including Oxo, Quorn and Ambrosia custard, chose Zetes partly because it was able to efficiently integrate the Track & Trace solution into Premier’s existing SAP systems.
The Hovis division produces 2 million loaves of bread every day. Zetes’ system, which is currently on trial, will be able to integrate 500 barcode sacanning devices to track and trace products across factories and distribution centres.
Unique to the tailored package is a component that enables the SAP system to receive data from fixed scanners. These scanners have been installed in three facilities to ensure automated processes for business controls, product visibility and traceability and maintain responsiveness to time-critical events.
Subject to the success of the initial pilot phase, Premier will consider a full roll out of the traceability solution to all 23 of its Hovis UK sites during 2010.
Zetes used its SAP toolkit MiNetConnect to link mobile devices to Premier’s existing system. MiNetConnect provides a direct link between SAP and mobile or fixed scanning devices to capture, validate, and process transactions faster, in real-time and with increased accuracy and system reliability.
“The traceability solution we are piloting with Zetes will, we hope, solve long standing issues our company has faced within the Hovis bakery supply chain.”James Hannay, VP of Northern Europe for Zetes, said: “Improved traceability is important for Premier on many levels, enabling better management of product supply into the marketplace and more accurate stock replenishment. This translates into a better service to retailers and greater consumer satisfaction.”
